Chapter 6: Goals

Nothing happens in The Broken Empires RPG™ without goals. More than just a collection of your character’s desires, goals are the means by which characters in the Broken Empires advance. By pursuing your character’s goals over a game session, you’ll accrue XP, allowing you to increase your skills or purchase new Talents.

Goals are often an afterthought in RPGs, something to guide your character when convenient. In the Broken Empires, however, goals are instrumental to the game, providing purpose and direction to each character. Goals represent what the characters want or need—because without wanting or needing something, characters have no reason to take action. And by taking action to pursue their characters’ goals, the players wind up driving the game forward, without having to wait for job offers from strange old wizards in taverns, or other such GM fabrications.
